For what was believed to be the better part of ten years, a dog lived almost entirely alone on the rooftop of a building in Mexico City. Day after day, he paced back and forth in the same confined space, with little more than the basic necessities provided by the people responsible for him.
His living conditions had taken a visible toll. Long, heavy layers of matted fur covered his frail body so completely that it was difficult to see the small dog underneath. He had survived for years, but his appearance reflected how much care and attention he had been missing.

Neighbors had reportedly watched his situation for a long time. Several complaints were made to local officials, but the efforts did not bring about the change he needed. Eventually, one family decided to contact an animal rescue organization directly.
That call would finally give the neglected dog a chance to leave the rooftop behind. But before he could begin a new life, there was still a great deal to be done.

After Years on the Rooftop, Someone Finally Stepped In
The family reached out to Seres Libres A.C., an animal rescue organization in Mexico. Volunteers began speaking with the dog’s owners, hoping to persuade them to surrender him so he could receive proper care.
Eventually, the owners agreed.
For the first time in years, the dog was no longer confined to the rooftop where he had spent so much of his life. He had been removed from the conditions that had defined his existence for so long, but his physical condition showed just how much attention he needed.
Despite everything he had endured, the rescuers noticed something encouraging. His spirit had not disappeared beneath the layers of neglected fur and the difficult years behind him.
They chose a name that reflected the hope they saw in him: Soñador, the Spanish word for Dreamer.
It was a fitting name for a dog who was finally being given the opportunity to experience something beyond the life he had always known.

More Than 10 Pounds of Matted Fur Came Away
Volunteers from Seres Libres A.C. took Soñador to a veterinary clinic for an examination and the grooming he desperately needed.
His coat had become so heavily matted that it concealed much of his body. Removing it was not simply a matter of making him look different. It meant freeing him from an enormous burden he had carried for years.
The trimming removed more than 10 pounds of matted hair.
When the process was finished, the difference was astonishing. The shapeless figure that had once paced across the rooftop was now recognizable as a dog again. Beneath all that fur was a frail senior who had finally been given a chance to feel more comfortable.
And his reaction made the transformation even more meaningful.
According to Renata, the president of Seres Libres A.C., Soñador showed his happiness whenever he wagged his tail.
“He has a lot of joy and he’s willing to live again,” she told The Dodo.
A Senior Dog With Plenty of Life Left to Discover
Although Soñador’s appearance and circumstances had changed dramatically, his recovery was not finished. As a senior dog, he continued to face health challenges and was receiving treatment for them.
Still, his rescuers were encouraged by his attitude. After spending so much of his life in one place, he seemed eager to experience the world beyond the rooftop.
“He wants to know the world,” Renata said. “His attitude is amazing.“
For the volunteers caring for him, that enthusiasm was a reason to keep working toward something more than a rescue and a medical recovery. They wanted Soñador to have the kind of everyday life that had been missing for so long: a safe place to rest, people who cared about him, and the freedom to enjoy his surroundings.

There was also hope that this next chapter would include a permanent family. By the time the story was shared, some people had already expressed interest in adopting him.
Renata understood that Soñador might not have many years ahead of him. She explained that he had spent around ten years in terrible conditions and could have only a few years of life remaining.
But the rescue team was determined to make those years count.
“We’re going to make the best out of them,” she said.

Soñador had already lost so much time on that rooftop. Now, instead of spending his days pacing alone, he had people looking after his health and working to find him a loving home.
His future was still unfolding, but one thing had changed for good: he was no longer facing it alone.
