When rescuers arrived at a sprawling cornfield in South Lubbock, they were met with a heartbreaking sight. A small creature was wandering alone, but he barely even looked like a dog. His coat was so severely matted that he was completely encased in a thick, heavy shell of his own fur.
The South Plains SPCA had seen many difficult situations, but this was a level of extreme neglect that stunned even their most experienced volunteers. The dog, whom they gently named Matt, was carrying years of abandonment on his small frame. His fur was densely packed with painful goat head stickers, beetles, and shockingly, an old leash that had become completely swallowed by the hardened tangles.
He was so buried beneath the filth that his rescuers could not even see his face or assess his condition. Knowing the grooming process would be far too painful for him to endure while awake, they carefully transported him to a local veterinary hospital, hoping to finally uncover the helpless animal trapped inside.

The Weight of the Past
At the clinic, the veterinary team knew they had to work quickly but gently. Because the matting was so tight against his skin, they sedated Matt to spare him from any fear or physical distress during the arduous process.
With the help of Kayla Thurman, a groomer and dedicated foster volunteer, the team spent an intensive hour carefully shaving away the hardened armor of fur.
As the clippers worked through the dense layers, the true scale of Matt’s suffering became clear. They removed an astounding three pounds of matted hair from his tiny frame. For a dog that ultimately weighed only fourteen pounds, carrying that amount of filthy, debris-filled fur was an unimaginable daily burden.
“We thought we could find the puppy under there but we weren’t able to, so we reached out to Kayla Thurman… They sedated him for us and shaved him down, and we picked stickers off and cut his nails and cleaned his ears and found the little precious dog that he is,” shared Kim Moyers, President of the South Plains SPCA.

A Beautiful Spirit Revealed
When Matt finally woke up from the sedation, his physical world had entirely changed. For the first time in years, he could move freely without the agonizing pull of matted fur dragging him down.
He was no longer a faceless mass of neglect. Underneath all the dirt and pain was a sweet, six-year-old dog with soft eyes and a gentle spirit that had somehow survived his ordeal.
Tori Houston, a seasoned volunteer who has fostered over five hundred dogs in her five years with the rescue, stepped up to give Matt a safe place to heal. Even with all her experience, Matt’s dramatic transformation left a lasting impression.
“I would have never thought underneath all of that hair, that this beautiful, gorgeous-looking dog would be under all of that,” Tori reflected.

The Journey to Healing
Today, Matt is resting in a warm, comfortable home, completely free from the painful weight he carried for so long. His physical recovery will take time, but he is now surrounded by people who are dedicated to showing him the gentle touch he was denied for years.
He will remain under the careful watch of his foster family until he is fully healed, vetted, and ready to find a forever home where he will always be cared for.

“Sometimes, removing the heavy, physical burdens of a painful past is the only way to allow a quiet spirit the space to finally breathe.”
