Senior Chihuahua Found Clinging to a Shopping Cart in a Rushing Canal Gets a Second Chance

A quiet walk along a canal in Arizona turned into an unexpected rescue when a Good Samaritan noticed something unusual in the rushing water. A shopping cart was stranded in the middle of the canal, partially submerged. But as she looked closer, she realized it was not empty. A small dog was clinging to the cart, surrounded by water with nowhere safe to go.

The dog was a 10-year-old Chihuahua mix who would later be named Dorothea. Somehow, she had ended up on top of the shopping cart, and the moving water had left her in a dangerous position. With no way to reach her, the woman quickly contacted the Arizona Humane Society (AHS) for help.

Knowing the situation was urgent, AHS called the Phoenix Fire Department. Emergency Animal Medical Technician Hunter Stribling and the firefighters arrived and began working together to bring the frightened senior dog to safety. What followed would give Dorothea a chance at a life far removed from the frightening scene where she was found.

A Rescue Against the Current

Dorothea was understandably scared as the rescuers approached. She was still perched on the shopping cart in the middle of the canal, and reaching her safely required careful coordination.

The teams used a ladder and several rescue devices to get close enough to her. Rather than simply trying to pull her out, they carefully moved the cart toward the canal’s edge. Once it was within reach, they secured Dorothea and lifted her onto dry land.

After the tense moments in the water, her reaction was a welcome sight. As soon as she was safely ashore, her tail began wagging.

AHS later expressed its gratitude for the quick response of its field team and the Phoenix Fire Department, whose combined efforts had given the little dog another chance at life.

Dorothea was immediately taken to an AHS ambulance for an initial medical assessment. She was hungry, dehydrated, dirty, and covered in ticks. The canal water had left her smelling unpleasant, but there was no indication of major injuries.

She was then transported to the Lazin Animal Foundation Trauma Hospital for a more thorough examination and the care she needed.

A Surprisingly Strong Little Survivor

Considering what she had just endured, Dorothea was in remarkably good health. Her medical needs were relatively minor, although she did require dental treatment to remove a couple of fractured teeth.

Once those issues were addressed, the focus shifted to helping her recover in comfort. She received attention from the veterinary team and plenty of affection from the people around her. AHS also arranged a spa day with one of its groomers, giving the senior dog a chance to feel clean and cared for again.

No one knew how long Dorothea had been stranded in the canal or how she had gotten there. The circumstances that brought her to the shopping cart remained a mystery. What was clear was how fortunate she had been that someone noticed her before it was too late.

From the Canal to a Forever Home

Dorothea spent about a month at the Arizona Humane Society, receiving care, cuddles, and attention while waiting for the next chapter of her life.

Eventually, a family in Youngtown, Arizona, chose to adopt her. The little Chihuahua mix who had once been trapped in rushing water now had a home where she could enjoy the comfort and affection every dog deserves.

Her rescue had depended on a passerby who stopped to investigate, an emergency medical technician who responded quickly, and firefighters willing to work through a difficult situation. Each played a part in getting her out of the canal and into safety.

AHS described Dorothea’s journey as a story of resilience and survival, ending with the words, “Miracles do happen.”

For a 10-year-old dog whose life had nearly ended in the middle of a canal, those words seemed especially fitting.
