When Vanessa Grandez was walking near her home in Peru, she noticed a small, furry figure lying motionless beside the road. At first glance, the little dog appeared to be lifeless. But as Vanessa got closer, she realized he was still alive, even though he had been badly injured after being hit by a car.
The dog had been left lying there without anyone coming to his aid. His condition was serious, and he needed medical attention urgently. Vanessa did not turn away. She gathered the injured dog into her arms and rushed him to a veterinarian, hoping there was still something that could be done to save him.

The examination revealed that the accident had left the dog with a broken spine. Emergency surgery was necessary, and his recovery was going to be difficult. Vanessa named him Peluchin and began raising funds to help cover his medical expenses. But she was also determined to give him something just as important as treatment: a safe place to recover and people willing to help him through whatever came next.

A Long Recovery After a Devastating Injury
After surgery, Peluchin went home with Vanessa, where he could rest and begin recovering from the accident. Although his personality soon revealed a cheerful, energetic little dog, his physical condition remained a serious challenge.
Peluchin appeared to have lost the use of his back legs. He moved around the house by crawling, unable to walk as other dogs normally would. His spirit seemed to be recovering faster than his body, and Vanessa knew that finding ways to support his mobility would be important.

Rather than allowing his limitations to define his daily life, she looked for ways to help him regain strength. She wanted Peluchin to have opportunities to move his rear legs and practice using them, even though his long-term progress remained uncertain.
“Sometimes, recovery means finding a different way forward when the path back to normal is not yet clear.”
Vanessa and her boyfriend, Sebastian, began considering a wheelchair that could help Peluchin move more easily while encouraging him to exercise his back legs. Sebastian took on the task of building a custom mobility aid designed to fit the little dog.
The result gave Peluchin a new way to get around. Instead of relying entirely on crawling, he could use the wheelchair to move with greater mobility and practice engaging his rear limbs.

A Wheelchair Helped Peluchin Find New Energy
The wheelchair became an important part of Peluchin’s rehabilitation. Vanessa noticed that he seemed to have more energy and a stronger desire to try walking again.
“He has improved a lot with the wheelchair,” Grandez said. “You can see he has more energy and the desire to walk again.”
His progress did not mean that his injury had disappeared or that he could already walk independently. He was still using the wheelchair, and his recovery continued to require patience. But the changes Vanessa observed gave her reason to remain hopeful.
Peluchin had gone from lying helpless beside a road to moving around with assistance and showing more enthusiasm for his surroundings. His personality had remained bright throughout the process, and now he had a way to explore more of his world despite his physical limitations.

For Vanessa, helping him recover also meant thinking about what would happen after his immediate medical needs had been addressed.
Finding Peluchin a Family of His Own
Vanessa was deeply attached to Peluchin, but she could not keep pets where she lived. She therefore began looking for a family that could give him a permanent home and continue caring for him.
After his surgical stitches were removed, she handed him over to his new family. It was another important transition for a dog whose life had already changed dramatically in a short period of time.
Vanessa did not simply disappear from his life after the adoption. She continued visiting him and checking on how he was doing, maintaining the connection that had begun when she found him injured beside the road.
“I was like his mother during his recovery,” she said.
Peluchin was still using his wheelchair, but he had made considerable progress since Vanessa first found him. She remained hopeful that one day he might regain enough mobility to run toward her and jump into her arms without assistance.

For now, his story is one of continued rehabilitation rather than a complete physical recovery. Yet the little dog who once lay helpless on the roadside now has a family, a custom wheelchair, and people who remain invested in his future.
Vanessa’s decision to stop that day gave Peluchin the chance to receive emergency treatment and begin a new life. Her continued care helped him find ways to move forward, even when walking on his own remained beyond his reach.
And whenever Vanessa visits him, she has another opportunity to see just how far he has come—and to keep cheering him on.
