Nearly 30 Hours Beneath the Mud, a Dog Was Found Alive by Firefighters

In the aftermath of a devastating landslide, the ground was covered with thick mud, tangled roots, and broken debris. The destruction made it difficult for rescuers to know what might still be buried beneath the surface. At first, there was no obvious sign that an animal had survived.

Then someone noticed two eyes staring out from the mud.

A dog was trapped almost completely underground. Only his head remained above the surface, while the rest of his body was buried beneath heavy, compacted earth. According to reports accompanying the rescue footage, he had been stuck there for nearly 30 hours.

He could not stand, turn around, or move himself to safety. Yet somehow, he was still breathing.

A Dog Trapped Beneath a Mountain of Mud

When firefighters reached the dog, they quickly understood that freeing him would require considerable care. His body was hidden beneath layers of mud, with roots and fragments of debris pressing around him. There was no way to know what injuries he might have suffered or whether anything beneath the surface was holding him in place.

Simply grabbing his head and pulling him out could have caused serious harm.

Instead, the rescuers knelt beside him and began removing the mud with their bare hands. They worked slowly, taking small amounts at a time and paying close attention to the dog’s condition.

His eyes followed their movements as they cleared the earth around his head and shoulders. The first priority was to create more room around his neck so he could breathe more comfortably.

Once that area was cleared, the firefighters gradually worked downward toward his front legs. The mud was thick and tightly packed, making every movement difficult. Roots and pieces of debris also had to be removed without pushing them further against his body.

It was slow work, but rushing was not an option.

Every Handful of Mud Brought Him Closer to Freedom

As the excavation continued, more of the dog’s body slowly emerged. First came his neck, followed by his shoulders and part of his upper torso.

The firefighters continued digging around him, carefully loosening the earth rather than trying to pull him free. At times, one rescuer stayed close to the dog’s face, offering a reassuring presence while the others worked.

The dog remained unusually still. After nearly 30 hours buried in one position, he appeared profoundly exhausted. His lack of movement did not mean he was comfortable; he simply seemed to have very little strength left.

Even as more of his body became visible, the rescuers knew they still had to reach his lower half. They continued clearing the surrounding mud until there was enough space to lift him without forcing his body against anything that remained trapped beneath the surface.

Only then did they attempt the final lift.

Working together, the firefighters gently raised the dog out of the excavation. His coat was completely covered in mud, his legs hung weakly, and his body trembled as they carried him away.

He did not suddenly jump up or try to run. After everything he had endured, he was far too weak for that.

But he was finally free.

His First Moments on Solid Ground

The firefighters placed him carefully onto a wooden board, using it as a temporary stretcher to support his weakened body.

Several rescuers gathered around him. One gently wiped the mud from his face, while others checked his body and legs for visible injuries. A bandage was also wrapped around an affected limb as the team provided initial care.

The atmosphere was different now. The urgent digging had ended, replaced by a quieter effort to make sure the dog was safe enough to be transported.

Although he was no longer buried, the danger had not necessarily passed. Nearly 30 hours of pressure and immobility could have left injuries that were not immediately visible. His condition still needed a proper medical examination.

The firefighters therefore kept him supported on the board rather than encouraging him to stand. His body had been under tremendous strain, and moving him too soon could have made an unseen injury worse.

For the first time since the landslide, nothing was pressing him into the earth.

Someone Had Seen the Eyes in the Mud

Landslides leave behind enormous challenges for emergency crews. Roads can be blocked, homes damaged, and unstable ground can make every rescue operation more difficult. In the middle of such widespread destruction, a small animal buried beneath the mud could easily have remained unnoticed.

This dog was almost entirely hidden. There was no clear sign of his presence beyond the small portion of his head above the surface.

Yet someone noticed him.

And when firefighters realized he was alive, they did not give up on him or attempt a hurried extraction. They spent the time needed to uncover his body, removing the mud by hand until they could lift him safely.

The available footage does not reveal the full extent of his injuries or what happened after he was prepared for transport. His recovery would depend on what medical examinations found and the care he received afterward.

Still, the rescue itself marked an extraordinary turning point.

At the beginning, only a pair of eyes could be seen above the mud. By the end, the dog was resting on a wooden board, surrounded by people who had worked carefully to bring him out.

In a landscape where so much had been swallowed by the earth, one small life had not been forgotten.
