When rescuers from Sidewalk Specials found Gunnar, he was just a tiny puppy struggling to survive on the streets. He had spent a week alone in the cold, frightened and unwell, with little food to keep him going. Despite his condition, the little dog still greeted the people who approached him with a wagging tail.
What happened next made his rescue especially memorable. Gunnar had a small piece of bread, almost comically large compared with his little body, yet he seemed willing to share it with the strangers who had come to help him. He was hungry himself, but his friendly nature had not disappeared.
The rescuers knew they had arrived at a critical moment. Gunnar was seriously ill, and without medical attention and proper food, his chances of surviving much longer on the streets were uncertain. His journey was about to change, but first, the tiny puppy needed help getting strong enough to enjoy the life waiting for him.

The Little Puppy Who Needed Help More Than Anyone Realized
Sidewalk Specials took Gunnar to a veterinarian, where an examination revealed just how vulnerable he was. He was severely anemic and suffering from tick bite fever, along with a serious infestation of worms and ticks. Beneath his cheerful greeting was a very sick puppy who needed treatment and a safe place to recover.
“We were there just in the nick of time for him,” one of his rescuers said.

Gunnar spent the night at the veterinary clinic. Thankfully, he was eventually given the all-clear to move into foster care, where he could rest, eat properly, and begin recovering away from the dangers of the street.
For a puppy so young, even a week of being cold, hungry, and alone was a great deal to endure. Yet Gunnar’s friendly disposition remained one of the first things people noticed about him.
His time in foster care was brief. After spending a week with his foster family, he was welcomed into a permanent home at around nine weeks old.
His new family did not have to spend long waiting for him to feel comfortable. Gunnar was tiny, described as being about half the length of an arm, but he seemed ready to embrace the people and surroundings that had become part of his new life.
Discovering a World Beyond the Streets
Gunnar’s new home opened up a world of experiences that were entirely different from the life he had known outside. Having apparently never encountered a lawn before, he approached his surroundings with endless curiosity. There was always something new to investigate, and he seemed eager to explore it all.
Running quickly became one of his favorite activities. He loved chasing a ball and bringing it back, or sometimes choosing a stone instead. What began as ordinary puppy play soon developed into a particularly amusing habit.
Gunnar became obsessed with finding the perfect rock.
He did not simply grab the first stone he encountered. Instead, he would search carefully, looking for the one that met his own particular standards before proudly carrying it over to his family. It was a small, distinctive quirk that became part of his personality.
Freya, his mom, affectionately described him as their little rock star.
“Sometimes, the happiest discoveries are the ordinary things an animal can finally experience when life gives them the room to explore.”

For Gunnar, a patch of grass, a game of fetch, or the perfect stone could turn an ordinary afternoon into something exciting. These simple pleasures made his new life feel very different from the cold and uncertainty of his early days.
From Rescued Puppy to Wonderful Foster Brother
Gunnar’s family began fostering other dogs around the start of the pandemic. Part of the motivation was to give their own dog more opportunities to play and interact with other puppies.
It turned out that Gunnar was well suited to the role.
Naturally friendly and inquisitive, he would take time to get acquainted with new arrivals. Once they became comfortable around him, he often seemed to take the lead, showing them around and helping them settle into their surroundings.
The cheerful puppy who had once been found alone on the streets had become a familiar presence for other dogs arriving in need of care. His curiosity and sociable nature had carried over into this new part of his life.

Gunnar’s story began with a small piece of bread and a puppy who, despite being hungry and unwell, still welcomed the people who approached him. Today, his days are filled with play, exploration, and the company of his family and their temporary canine guests.
The puppy who once had so little now has a home full of activity, a family who adores him, and a seemingly endless collection of rocks to discover. His remarkable change did not come from losing the friendly spirit he showed on the day of his rescue. It came from finally having a safe place where that spirit could flourish.
