When rescuers found Uni, a tiny dog weighing just 12 pounds, he was trapped inside a crate, abandoned in conditions no animal should ever have to endure. His appearance was so heartbreaking that it was difficult to recognize the little dog beneath the layers of tangled, filthy fur covering his body.
He was extremely frightened. Whenever someone approached, panic took over, and he struggled to understand what was happening around him. His matted coat was soaked with urine and covered in feces, leaving only his sad, frightened eyes visible. Even his mouth was hidden beneath the thick matting.
Underneath all that fur, Uni was painfully thin, little more than skin and bones.
For the rescuers, getting him out was only the beginning. The little dog needed immediate medical attention, but before he could begin recovering, someone had to help him through the fear that seemed to overwhelm him.

An Emergency Rescue and a Difficult First Examination
A rescuer quickly took Uni to an emergency hospital, where he received immediate medical care. His condition required attention, and the team began working to address the problems caused by his severe neglect.
The physical condition was alarming, but his emotional state was just as concerning. Uni was extremely panicked, and the experience of being handled and examined was clearly difficult for him.
For a dog who had been found in such circumstances, even ordinary human contact could be overwhelming.

His tangled coat also made it difficult to see his actual condition. With his mouth hidden beneath the matting and so little of his body visible, the grooming process was an important part of helping him move forward.
The rescuers knew he would need continued care and support. They also understood that recovery would take more than medical treatment alone.
“Sometimes, the first step toward a better life is simply finding a place where fear no longer has to make every decision.”
Slowly, Uni Began to Feel Better
As Uni received treatment and grooming, the little dog began moving beyond the condition in which he had been discovered. There was still a long road ahead, but the rescuers reported that he was already feeling much better.

At just 12 pounds, he was a tiny fighter who had endured an extraordinarily difficult beginning.
The team asked for love and support for Uni as he continued through recovery. His situation was heartbreaking, and although nobody could know exactly what he had experienced before being found, his physical condition showed how much care he needed.
Every part of his recovery mattered, from medical attention to having his coat cleaned and receiving gentle care.
Eventually, Uni was ready to leave the hospital and move into the next stage of his journey.

A New Name and a Life Filled With Care
After his hospital stay, Uni was taken to the rescue shelter. The environment was different now. Instead of being alone in a crate, he was surrounded by people who wanted to help him and give him the attention he needed.
For the first time in the story shared by his rescuers, he had a safe place to rest and people looking after him.
His transformation continued with the help of his foster mom, Kathleen. Under her care, the frightened little dog began to show a very different side of himself.
The sadness that had once been so noticeable in his eyes gave way to a brighter expression. His rescuers described his eyes as shining with happiness and gratitude, a striking contrast to the terrified dog they had first encountered.
Uni also received a new name: Teddy.
It was more than a change in what people called him. Teddy was beginning a different chapter, one in which his days would no longer be defined by the conditions in which he had been found.
His journey was not simply about looking different after grooming or feeling better after medical treatment. It was also about discovering the comfort of being welcomed, protected, and cared for.

The little dog who once panicked when people came near him now had a foster mom helping him build a life around kindness.
“For a dog who once had so little, being able to feel safe and wanted can change the meaning of an entire world.”
Welcome to your new life, Teddy. You are loved, and you matter.
