When volunteers with Ray Animal Rescue encountered Elsa on the streets of Romania, she looked almost unrecognizable as a dog. Her body was nearly hairless because of a severe skin condition caused by mites, and her appearance made her seem much larger and more intimidating than an ordinary stray. Yet when the rescuers approached, Elsa walked straight toward them, wagging her tail as though she understood they had come to help.
There was something immediately striking about her gentle nature. Elsa repeatedly offered her paw to one of the women, greeting the strangers with a friendliness that seemed surprising given her difficult life on the streets. She did not shy away from their attention, and the volunteers soon realized that this affectionate dog was ready to accept their help.

But Elsa had one important condition before she would leave her old life behind. She led the rescuers to her closest companion, a smaller dog named Hugo. The two had formed a strong bond while surviving on the streets together, and Elsa was not going anywhere without him.

Elsa’s Rescue Had to Include Hugo
The rescuers quickly understood what Elsa was trying to show them. Helping her meant helping Hugo, too. Neither dog would have to remain on the streets simply because the other needed rescuing, so the volunteers brought both of them along and took Elsa directly to a veterinarian.

Elsa’s skin condition required considerable attention. The veterinary team identified a mite-related disease, and her treatment involved regular baths over approximately two months. Restoring her coat and improving her skin would take time, but at least she was now somewhere safe enough to receive consistent care.
Hugo, meanwhile, found a home much sooner. He was adopted relatively quickly, leaving Elsa to continue her treatment while the rescuers focused on finding a suitable place for her.
Although the medical care was essential, Elsa’s size presented another challenge. One of the rescuers brought her home temporarily, but not all the other dogs there were comfortable around such a large newcomer. It became clear that Elsa needed a different arrangement where she could settle in without creating tension among the animals already living there.
Finding the right foster home would be the next important step.
The Dog Who Looked Intimidating Had a Gentle Heart
When a family learned that Elsa needed a foster home for Christmas, they became curious about the dog behind the unusual appearance. She looked enormous to them, even a little frightening at first, but something about her made them want to get to know her.
The arrangement was supposed to be temporary. Elsa was expected to stay with them for only two or three days while the family considered whether they could take her in.

Those few days, however, changed everything.
As the family spent time with Elsa, they discovered just how affectionate she could be. She loved people and seemed especially excited whenever visitors arrived. Her happiness sometimes showed itself in an amusing habit: she would bite her blanket when she became excited.
It was a far cry from the imposing figure people might have imagined when they first saw her photographs. Beneath her size was a dog who enjoyed human company and seemed delighted whenever someone paid her attention.
When the time came for the family to consider letting Elsa go, the foster caregiver became overwhelmed with emotion and cried at the thought of losing her. The prospect of saying goodbye suddenly felt much harder than expected.
That reaction made the decision clear. Elsa would not be leaving after all.
A Home Where Elsa Could Finally Belong
The family chose to keep Elsa, turning what began as a short foster stay into a lasting home. The large, hairless stray who had once approached rescuers on the streets with nothing but a wagging tail was now surrounded by people who understood her personality and loved having her around.
Her journey had not been simple. She needed months of treatment for her skin condition, and finding the right home required patience. But the same gentle nature that led her to trust the rescuers helped her form a connection with the people who eventually welcomed her into their lives.
“Sometimes, the animal we expect to care for only briefly is the one who quietly finds a permanent place in our hearts.”

Elsa had once refused to leave Hugo behind, making sure her friend was rescued alongside her. Later, after Hugo found his own home, Elsa found a family of her own, too.
What began with two stray dogs depending on each other became two separate journeys toward safety. And for Elsa, the temporary home that was supposed to last just a few days became the place where she finally belonged.
