Cadence Was Found Injured in a Dark Alley, but a Team of Rescuers Refused to Give Up on Her

When Hope for Paws received an urgent call from Lisa Chiarelli about an injured Pit Bull, there was little time to waste. Lisa’s friends had followed the dog for two hours before she finally collapsed in a dark alley. By then, she was in such poor condition that she desperately needed help.

Jennifer and Dax Grooms stayed beside the exhausted dog until Eldad Hagar arrived. Despite everything she had endured, she allowed him to touch her, giving the rescuers a chance to approach her gently and begin helping her.

But when the dog finally stood up, the extent of her injuries became painfully clear. What had begun as a desperate search for an injured animal had turned into a race to get her the medical care she needed.

The Injuries That Told a Troubling Story

The rescue team named the dog Cadence and rushed her to a veterinary hospital. Her injuries raised concerns that she might have been used as a bait dog in a dog-fighting operation. Although her exact past was uncertain, the condition in which she was found made it clear that she needed extensive care.

Veterinarians began treating her wounds, cleaning the injured areas, and providing medication to support her recovery. One of the most urgent concerns involved her eyes, which had suffered injuries serious enough to require specialized treatment.

For Cadence, the first stage of recovery was about getting through each day and giving her body a chance to heal. She could not understand the plans being made around her, but the people caring for her were determined to give her every opportunity to recover.

And she would not have to face the difficult days alone.

Within the first 24 hours, people began visiting to offer comfort and encouragement. Jacqueline Artecona came to cheer her up each night, while Lisa Arturo brought treats and affectionate kisses. Their visits added moments of warmth to a period otherwise filled with medical treatment and recovery.

An Unexpected Friend Helps Cadence Feel Less Alone

The day after Cadence was rescued, the team saved another Pit Bull named Chance. His arrival brought an unexpected moment to Cadence’s recovery.

Chance approached her and began licking her wounds, appearing to offer gentle companionship. Cadence accepted his affection, allowing him to remain close.

After the pain and uncertainty surrounding her rescue, this quiet interaction offered a different picture of her life. She was no longer simply an injured dog receiving treatment. She was also an animal capable of sharing space and affection with another dog.

“Sometimes, comfort comes without words. A gentle presence can offer reassurance that no one needs to explain.”

Chance could not undo what had happened to Cadence, but his companionship became one of the memorable moments in her journey. Seeing her accept his affection was a welcome reminder that there was still room for gentleness in her life.

Surgery and the Road to Recovery

Cadence’s injuries required more than time and routine wound care. Dr. Christin Fahrer performed surgery in an effort to save her eyes, giving her another important chance at recovery.

The procedure marked a critical stage in her treatment. Afterward, Cadence continued healing while her caregivers waited for her injuries to improve. Two weeks later, her stitches were removed, marking another milestone in a journey that had begun with her collapse in a dark alley.

Her progress was not defined by a single dramatic moment. It came through veterinary treatment, careful attention, and the steady support of people who continued showing up for her.

As her condition improved, the possibility of a life beyond the hospital became more real.

Discovering a Life Beyond the Hospital

Cadence eventually went to a foster home with Lisa Chiarelli, whose call had helped set her rescue in motion. Away from the immediate demands of medical treatment, she had the opportunity to experience a different side of life.

She learned to swim and began enjoying activities that had once seemed far removed from the circumstances in which she was found. Her affection for other dogs also became clear, and she proved to be gentle with children.

These details offered a fuller picture of Cadence. Her story was no longer centered solely on her injuries or the troubling possibility of her past. It was also about the things she enjoyed, the company she welcomed, and the life she was beginning to experience.

“Cadence’s story did not end with the injuries she carried into the hospital. It continued with every new experience that gave her room to enjoy the life ahead.”

From the dark alley where she collapsed to a foster home where she could swim and spend time with others, Cadence’s journey showed what sustained care can make possible. Eldad Hagar, the Hope for Paws team, the veterinarians, and the people who visited and supported her all played a part in helping her move forward.

Her past could not be changed, but it did not have to define every chapter that followed. Cadence was finally getting the opportunity to live a life shaped by care, companionship, and the simple freedom to enjoy being a dog.
