The dog’s owner casually stepped outside and told the stunned neighbor to just take the starving animal away. They nonchalantly admitted they could no longer afford to feed him and offered up two more dogs without a second thought.
“She was freaking out like, ‘Oh my gosh, I just found this baby on the road,’” Muse, the director of Aviary Creature Rescue, recalled. “She’s like, ‘The owner walked outside while I was untangling her and said, “That’s my dog … I have two others if you want ’em.”’”
Muse felt a familiar, heavy ache in her chest upon hearing the cold nature of this sudden, careless surrender. She immediately contacted a trusted foster volunteer to safely secure the other two vulnerable dogs the very next day.
The dedicated volunteer successfully picked up the pair, but her subsequent phone call completely changed the scope of the mission. She quietly informed Muse that there were actually several more neglected dogs trapped inside the dark, crowded home.
Approaching a Difficult Situation With an Open Heart
Muse decided to visit the property the following morning, carrying a heavy heart but a completely open, non-judgmental mindset. She desperately hoped the family genuinely loved their pets and simply needed some temporary financial assistance to survive the month.
“I always approach it with an open mindset of like, ‘Do they actually love these dogs? Can we maybe provide resources if they’re just struggling?’” Muse explained. “I even told [the owner] about a pet food bank in the area.”
The owner politely chatted for a brief moment before coldly handing over three more malnourished dogs from the living room. All of these fragile animals were incredibly terrified, shaking violently as they were placed into the rescue team’s careful arms.
As emotional tensions slowly began to rise on the porch, Muse suddenly spotted another emaciated dog sprinting around the dirt yard. She knew she had to involve the local police department to safely and peacefully complete this massive, overwhelming rescue operation.
A Shaking Pile of Pups and One Brave Mother
With the calm assistance of the responding officers, the team successfully removed the final two neglected dogs from the property. In total, the owners surrendered eight frail, deeply confused Chihuahua mixes that spanned several different generations of breeding.
“It was a mom, a dad and several litters from over the years,” Muse noted as she secured the heavy metal crates. She loaded the deeply traumatized animals into her transport van, feeling completely overwhelmed with absolutely no immediate plan for their future.
During the long, quiet ride, almost all of the rescued dogs completely shut down from pure, overwhelming terror. They huddled together in a tight, shaking pile, absolutely terrified of the unfamiliar world rapidly moving past the van windows.
But one sweet dog, the brave mother of the entire group, displayed an incredibly different and heartwarming reaction to her newfound freedom.
She walked gentle circles around her frightened babies, wagging her tail to let them know they were finally safe.
“The entire time, her tail was wagging,” Muse said with a warm, tearful smile. “She wanted treats from us… Mom was like, ‘It’s fine, we’re fine.’”
