A call brought rescuers from the Dog Rescue Shelter of Mladenovac to a remote field in Serbia, where a mother dog and her five puppies were reportedly struggling to survive. The area was vast, and finding such a small family in the open countryside was not going to be easy. But when one rescuer noticed an abandoned warehouse nearby, he decided to look inside.

In one corner of the neglected building, he found the mother and her puppies huddled among discarded bags of sand and cement. The little family had been left without reliable food or water, and their physical condition suggested they had been struggling for some time. The mother, only about two years old, had lost much of her fur to a serious skin disease, while her young puppies were visibly unwell.

Yet when the rescuer approached, the mother remained remarkably calm. Her puppies were only around a month old, and she had been trying to care for all five despite her own deteriorating health. At last, someone had found them, but the family still needed medical treatment and a safe place to recover.

Inside the Warehouse, a Mother Was Struggling to Care for Her Babies

The warehouse offered little comfort for a mother raising five young puppies. Discarded bags were scattered around the building, but there was no proper bedding, no dependable supply of food or water, and no suitable environment for the family to recover.

The mother had developed a severe case of demodectic mange, a condition caused by microscopic mites. Much of her fur had fallen out, and some of the affected areas of skin had become so damaged that wounds were beginning to open. Despite these problems, she had continued caring for her puppies.

The little ones were suffering from a milder form of the same condition. At around one month old, they were still heavily dependent on their mother, making her deteriorating health especially concerning.

The rescuer could see that bringing them outside was only the first step. All six dogs needed proper treatment, better living conditions, and time to regain their strength.

He gathered the mother and her puppies and took them to the Dog Rescue Shelter of Mladenovac. For the first time in what appeared to have been a difficult period, they were somewhere that could provide the care they needed.

Treatment Began With Baths, Medicine, and Proper Food

Once the family arrived at the shelter, the team began cleaning the dogs and treating the parasites responsible for their skin problems. Therapeutic baths were an important part of the process, helping remove the parasites while allowing the rescuers to care for their damaged skin.

The mother needed particular attention because of the severity of her condition. Her lost fur and open wounds showed how much care she required, while her puppies needed treatment suited to their own, milder symptoms.

Recovery would not happen overnight. The family needed continued therapy, suitable nutrition, and a cleaner environment in which to heal. As the puppies grew, they continued nursing while also beginning to eat soft food, giving them another source of nourishment.

These ordinary moments were important. The puppies were still very young, and their future depended on getting through this vulnerable stage safely. With the shelter providing food, treatment, and supervision, they finally had a better chance to develop without the hardships they had faced in the abandoned building.

Five Puppies Found Homes, While Their Mother Began to Recover

The rescue team planned to keep the family in a foster environment while treatment continued. Once the dogs had recovered sufficiently, they could begin the next stage of their lives and be considered for adoption.

Later, an update brought encouraging news: all five puppies had been adopted into permanent homes.

For the little dogs who had begun life in a warehouse surrounded by discarded building materials, finding families meant the possibility of growing up in safety and comfort. They would no longer have to depend on the uncertain conditions in which their mother had struggled to raise them.

Their mother’s journey required more patience. Her severe skin condition meant she needed treatment and time to recover, and her future depended on continued care.

The family had been discovered because someone took the time to search an abandoned building rather than assume there was nothing there. That decision brought six vulnerable dogs to safety and gave five young puppies the opportunity to begin their lives with families of their own.

Their story began in a forgotten corner of a warehouse, but it did not have to end there.
