When Krakka, a little terrier living in the United Kingdom, slipped away from home with her canine sibling, her owner, Glynis Elgey, had no idea how frightening the day would become. The two dogs had escaped together, drawn by the smells and open fields nearby. But when evening came, only one of them returned.
Glynis was relieved to see her other dog make it home safely that night, but Krakka was still missing. As the hours passed without any sign of the little terrier, concern grew. Somewhere beyond the safety of her home, Krakka could be injured, frightened, or unable to find her way back.
Glynis contacted Steve Priestman, a volunteer with Drone SAR for Lost Dogs UK, a team that uses drones to help locate missing pets. The search began across nearby farmland and open countryside, but despite their efforts, Krakka seemed to have vanished. Then, on the following day, her sibling suddenly became intensely interested in a cluster of rabbit holes, drawing the rescuers toward a discovery no one had expected.

A Search With No Sign of Krakka
Steve and the volunteers began searching the surrounding countryside as soon as they could. Using drones, they covered nearby farmland and open areas, hoping to spot Krakka or find some clue that might reveal where she had gone.
But the first search brought no answers.
The following day, the team widened its search area. Hours passed, and Krakka remained missing. By late afternoon, the volunteers were approaching the point where they might have to stop for the day without knowing whether the little dog was safe.
Then something changed.
Krakka’s canine sibling became fixated on a group of rabbit holes. Rather than moving on, the dog kept focusing on that particular spot, behaving in a way that caught the rescuers’ attention.
They decided to investigate.
What they discovered changed the entire search. Krakka was not simply lost somewhere in the countryside. She was trapped beneath the surface, hidden under the very ground the rescuers had been searching.
Three Feet Beneath the Soil, a Tiny Face Appears
The team immediately began digging, trying to reach Krakka without causing further harm. They worked carefully but urgently, removing soil from the narrow opening.
As the hole widened, they finally caught sight of her tiny nose, nearly three feet underground.
Soon, her fluffy white face appeared through the dirt.
For a moment, the rescuers hoped they could simply pull her free. But when they examined the situation more closely, they realized that getting her out would be far more difficult than they had first thought.
Thick tree roots had grown around Krakka’s body, trapping her beneath the earth. One large root was wrapped tightly around her abdomen, preventing her from wriggling free.

The team could not risk pulling her out forcefully. They needed to clear enough soil and carefully remove the obstruction while keeping her as safe as possible.
For nearly 20 minutes, the rescuers continued digging by hand. They worked around her body, gently removing dirt and trying to create enough space for her to escape.
Every movement mattered. Krakka was close enough for them to see and reach, yet the roots still held her in place.
“We’ll get you out, darling.”
The rescuers kept working until the root could finally be removed and Krakka had room to move.

The Moment Krakka Finally Broke Free
Then, at last, Krakka was out.
The relief was immediate. The volunteers celebrated as the little terrier emerged from the hole, free from the roots and dirt that had held her underground.
After hours of searching and the tense final minutes of digging, they could finally see her safely above ground. One rescuer described the moment as incredible, especially when Krakka began showering them with kisses and cuddles.
The frightened dog had been missing for so long that her family had no way of knowing what had happened to her. Now, thanks in part to her sibling’s unusual behavior, she had been found and brought back into the open.

But the team did not assume that her escape meant everything was fine. Krakka was taken to a veterinarian for a checkup, where she was examined for injuries.
Thankfully, she had not suffered any major injuries and was expected to be okay.
For Steve and the volunteers, the outcome was a tremendous relief. Their search had nearly reached the end of another day without answers, but they had stayed long enough to follow the clue that ultimately led them to Krakka.
A Reunion Made Possible by an Unlikely Clue
Krakka was reunited with her family, bringing an end to a frightening disappearance that had lasted far too long for those waiting for her.
Her sibling’s persistent interest in the rabbit holes had provided the clue the rescuers needed. Without that behavior, the team might not have realized that Krakka was trapped beneath the soil, especially when there had been no other clear sign of where she had gone.
The rescue also showed the value of combining careful observation with the work of experienced search volunteers. Drones helped the team cover the countryside, but it was the dogs’ behavior that drew their attention to the place where Krakka was hidden.
For Glynis, the most important thing was that Krakka was coming home. For the rescuers, seeing her safe and knowing she would recover made every hour of searching worthwhile.
“It was an incredible feeling knowing she was going to be OK and reunited with her family,” Steve said.
Krakka’s disappearance had begun with an ordinary adventure into the countryside. It ended with a painstaking rescue, a veterinarian’s reassuring examination, and a reunion that no one could take for granted.
Sometimes, the smallest clue can make all the difference. In Krakka’s case, it came from the dog who knew something was wrong and refused to ignore the spot where her missing companion was waiting beneath the ground.
