A Desperate Cry Near the Runway Leads to a Massive Rescue Effort for a Puppy Trapped in Tar

It started on the morning of May 31st with a sound that people simply could not ignore. A frantic, continuous crying was echoing near the airport runway in Brest, prompting concerned locals to immediately contact the fire and rescue department. When the crew arrived at the location, they found a puppy fighting a losing battle against an unexpected and deadly hazard.

The young dog had somehow wandered into a thick pool of industrial tar. Overnight, the temperature had dropped, causing the thick, black mass to harden around his small body. He was entirely glued to the ground, exhausted from hours of struggling to free himself. Beneath him was a deeper pit, and had he shifted further down, he would have been completely submerged. His only saving grace was that his muzzle had come to rest on a shallow patch of dirt, allowing him to keep breathing.

Extracting him was a delicate and arduous task. It took the rescue crew about an hour of careful work to pry his immobilized body from the hardened asphalt. But once he was finally lifted from the pit, it became clear that the physical rescue was only the very first step. Covered in the heavy, toxic substance, the puppy could not move, and the question of how to safely clean such a fragile animal hung heavily in the air.

The Weight of the Ordeal

Realizing the specialized care this situation required, the firefighters reached out to volunteers from the local animal welfare organization, Dobrota. The puppy was rushed to a veterinary clinic, but removing industrial tar from a living animal is not a task for a single pair of hands. The rescue team quickly called upon local residents for assistance, and the response was immediate.

Working together, a group of volunteers gently scrubbed the puppy’s coat using large amounts of sunflower oil and water to break down the adhesive.

The physical toll on the young dog was severe. Prolonged contact with the heavy substance had caused intense dehydration and chemical exposure, leaving him incredibly weak. By that evening, after a long day of intense care, he finally managed to eat and drink a little, offering his caretakers a brief moment of relief.

But that relief was short-lived.

As night fell, the puppy’s condition suddenly deteriorated. The remaining traces of tar in his fur began sticking to his recovery bed, causing him immense discomfort every time he tried to shift his weight. In his distress, he tried to pull the hardened pieces off with his teeth, leading to digestive distress and a complete refusal to eat or drink. The prolonged exposure to the heavy chemicals had also caused severe skin irritation, leaving his small body incredibly sensitive to the touch.

“Sometimes, an animal has to face the lingering shadows of their ordeal before they can finally step into the light.”

Many Hands, One Purpose

Realizing they needed to remove every last trace of the dangerous substance to save his life, the volunteers put out a second, urgent call to the community. They needed more help to thoroughly wash the exhausted puppy.

The response was overwhelming. People arrived at the facility carrying basins, hot water, gentle soaps, and shampoos, ready to do whatever was necessary.

They surrounded the frightened puppy, countless hands working gently and patiently to cleanse his fur. The contrast was profound—a dog who had spent the previous night completely isolated and trapped in the dark was now encircled by a community dedicated entirely to his comfort. The collective effort took hours, but it marked a definitive turning point in his survival.

By the fourth day, the heavy fog of exhaustion finally began to lift.

The puppy’s demeanor shifted dramatically, and for the first time since he was found crying by the runway, his caretakers noted a soft, relaxed expression that looked very much like a smile. While some of his fur ultimately had to be carefully clipped away to remove the most stubborn patches of tar, the heavy burden had been lifted from his shoulders.

Today, his irritated skin is being carefully treated, and he has been placed on a specialized diet to help him regain his strength and healthy weight. He no longer has to fight just to take his next step. Instead, surrounded by a town that refused to look the other way, he is simply learning how to rest.
