There is a special kind of heartbreak in seeing an animal whose body is failing them, yet their spirit remains completely unbroken.
When a dog falls ill, they don’t understand what is happening to their skin or their health. They only know that it hurts. And when that illness causes their family to abandon them on the streets, the physical pain is compounded by a devastating, confusing loneliness.
A few years ago, on the busy, sun-baked streets of Bali, a tiny stray puppy was living this exact, agonizing reality.
She had no fur left to protect her from the elements. Her small body was completely covered in bright red, painful-looking sores. Every movement seemed to radiate deep discomfort.
But despite her horrific condition, she hadn’t given up on humanity.

A Shocking Encounter and a Sweet Surprise
Charlotte Hailey, a dedicated volunteer with the Mission Paws’ible dog rescue, was simply walking through the area when the frail dog caught her attention.
The sight stopped her dead in her tracks.
“The moment I saw her, I was just shocked at how bad her skin was,” Hailey recalled. The pup was in desperate need of immediate medical intervention.
But as Hailey slowly approached, expecting the sick stray to cower or run away in fear, the dog did something completely unexpected. She walked right up to the rescuer. With a soft, gentle demeanor, she happily accepted a treat straight from Hailey’s hand.
“You could tell from her tail that she was just the sweetest little dog,” Hailey said.
That immediate, unwavering friendliness told a heartbreaking story. Feral street dogs do not trust strangers that quickly. This little girl clearly once had a home and a family—a family who likely abandoned her to the streets the moment her skin condition became too difficult to manage.
A Frantic Search for a Missing Girl
Hailey knew she had to get the dog to a clinic immediately.
However, she didn’t have any of her rescue supplies or a secure carrier with her. Looking at the dog’s raw, splotchy skin, Hailey knew that trying to pick her up bare-handed could cause the pup immense physical pain.
She made the difficult decision to leave temporarily, rushing to grab the proper equipment. But when she returned to the exact same spot shortly after, her heart sank.
The dog was completely gone.
Distraught and panicking that the sick puppy had wandered off to die in the shadows, Hailey frantically began asking locals in the area if they had seen her. Thankfully, a kind local man recognized the dog and pointed out the exact spot where she usually slept.
Hailey provided him with a safe, comfortable dog crate, and he promised to secure the fragile pup the very next time she appeared. True to his word, he was able to safely trap her in no time at all.
Shedding the Pain of the Past
Safely transported to the rescue facility, the sweet girl was officially named Delilah.
Despite being poked, prodded, and medicated, Delilah never lost her gentle disposition. She wagged her tail at every single volunteer, making fast friends with everyone who helped treat her raw skin.
With the right medication, high-quality food, and a massive amount of tender loving care, a stunning transformation began. Delilah’s painful sores slowly disappeared. Her beautiful, soft fur began to grow back. Within just a few short months, the naked, sickly street dog was completely unrecognizable.
She was placed in a loving foster home to continue her recovery, but her journey was far from over.

Finding Her Forever Shore
When a woman named Amelia saw Delilah, it was love at first sight.
She officially adopted the brave survivor, and the feeling of absolute devotion was instantly mutual. “When she came to me, she got out of the car and immediately started wagging her tail,” Amelia shared warmly. “To be honest, she was always out of her shell.”
When she was originally rescued, Delilah was only 8 months old. She had spent the majority of her short, tragic puppyhood suffering in severe physical pain.
But today, she finally gets to be the carefree puppy she was always meant to be.
Her absolute favorite thing in the world is visiting the local beach, where she runs for miles, splashing in the surf with her thick, healthy coat of fur shining brightly in the sun.
